Concerns about Facebook

Facebook is part of the breaking news. Instead of trying one more time to explain why, lets ask the question : are there really some concerns about privacy?




Created very recently, in 2004, Facebook is already known worldwide, being a main topic for more and more newspapers and TV shows. Its creator, Mark Zuckerberg, a 23 years old Harvard graduate, is already an accomplished entrepreneur, his company being nnown valued at nothing less than $15 Billion, as microsoft recently got 1,6% of the shares, for 240 million dollars.

As a result of this purchase, Microsoft is now in Charge of increasing Facebook's revenue. This is based essentially on advertising revenue, both CPC and CPM, and Facebook claims now t target its users more efficiently.




Targeting? What for? Well, it is said that more the adds are relevant compared to your interests and general situation, the more you're supposed to be interested to the add, and the more the advertiser will "transform" its media investment into revenue.

As a result, this means that Facebook is now profiling and using each single information displayed on each one of its 50 millions and growing population.


Then, what for? We can say here that Facebook is also very successful in creating "Stickyness", which means keeping people hours and hours on the Internet, just like on TV, exposed to commercials... How Facebook manages that? Pretty easily as anybody can create, post and share any content, which are, most of the time, just as useless as this vidéo of me doing my dishes:



Finaly, Facebook is also getting to be a major privacy issue. On November 24, a Canadian student, Adam Morrison studying at "l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard" University, was arrested for threatening people trough Facebook. It appeared the day after that this was actually an Stolen Identity issue. Yes, anybody can very easily use your identity, name and picture on facebook...
